Eco Citizens Unite

SaraShepherd2 In 2004, it was virtually impossible to find fabulous eco-fashion. I used to have to fly to Los Angeles for Linda Loudermilk dress fittings before big environmental events. How un-eco-friendly is that!  Now as 2009 approaches, all of that has changed thank goodness. It is now possible to find hip, beautiful, eco-conscious, organic, non-toxic, fair trade, slammin' head-turning eco-fashions in our own backyard. We have been liberated from the sea of beige.

Take the Eco Citizen Boutique for example at the green corner of Polk Street and Vallejo in San Francisco. Whenever I am in need of an ecofabulous outfit, I head straight to Joslin Van Arsdale's boutique.  Eco Citizen has the exclusive on the Eco Line of talented local SF designer Sara Shepherd. A graduate from the Academy of Art, she has already made it big by designing the signature dress for the opening of the San Francisco Symphony, and her feminine, sophisticated, sexy styles are often featured in top magazines including 7x7 and 944. Check out her hot little number pictured above.

Eco Citizen has just launched their new Are You An Eco Citizen campaign featuring some familiar faces, including Lucas Heldfond from the neighboring Spring Store (now has online shopping!), Zem Joaquin, and yours truly. Finally watching that America's Next Top Model marathon on Virgin Atlantic came in handy. We are all eco citizens of the world.

EcoCitizen Dresses Eco Citizen Jackets

Another staple in the quest for fabulous eco-fashion is Torso Vintages. You will leave elated and with a vintage-chic dress that no one else will have, guaranteed. They stock great velvet jackets for men. Now five years later, smashing eco-fashion is a mere walk, bike ride, or Prius whirl away.

Amazon Watch Party

The Amazon rainforest is one of the most extraordinary places on earth. Did you know for example that rainclouds from the Amazon supply over half of the water for America's farmlands?  and that the Amazon basin stores over 85 billion metric tons of carbon?

Amazon

Systematic Landscapes by Maya Lin

Maya Lin has always been a green maverick with a hammer. At only 21 years of age, she won the competition at Yale to design the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial in DC and has been raising eyebrows ever since.

Maya_lin_1 See the new extraordinary Maya Lin exhibition entitled Systematic Landscapes at the de Young Museum in San Francisco opening this Saturday October 25 and running through January 18.  Step inside the earth and see her jaw-dropping 2x4 hill made from 60,000 sustainable wooden blocks that swell into a wave. And that is just the beginning.

As a famous environmental artist, Maya Lin honors the striking and beautiful patterns inherent in nature and geography – and helps us to see them and ourselves in a new light. Be awed, delighted, entertained, and inspired at Systematic Landscapes, which is presented by PG&E. You can even walk through Blue Lake Pass (pictured) and under Water Line. Then take a stroll through Golden Gate Park while you are there. If you are like me, you simply don’t get there enough!  De Young Museum

For more environmental art – both attractive and provoking – take a trip through the intriguing pictures at www.greenmuseum.org and you just might find some jewels like Chrysanne Stathacos. But then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Hot New Book by Van Jones

GreenCollarEconomybook The new book by Van Jones is out!   It is called The Green Collar Economy - How One Solution Can Fix Our Two Biggest Problems, and it is hotter than a solar thermal plant.  What are the two problems?  Poverty and global warming/oil dependence.  What is the solution?  In the words of Van Jones, the green collar economy "connects the people who most need work with the work that most needs to be done."

The head of the Green For All organization, Van Jones is one of the most visionary and inspiring leaders of our time.  His solution is bold and compelling in its simplicity:  put millions of people to work re-powering America with clean energy. Get ready to install millions of solar panels, retrofit and weatherize millions of buildings, manufacture and install thousands of wind turbines, and green our cities with trees, parks and gardens. The future is bright green, and it includes everyone.

Think of it as a Green New Deal.  If we continue implementing, we can help to create millions of green collar jobs, rescue our economy, and save our environment. Now seems like a pretty darn good time to do this. How fast can we make this green dream a reality?  A fantastic pilot program is happening at the Ella Baker Center in Oakland, and more are sprouting up across the nation.  This is the ingenuity of the human spirit at work, and it is a beautiful thing. The Green Collar Economy by Van Jones.

Update:  Van's book is now on the New York Times best-seller list propelled by an outpouring of support from grassroots fans and online communities. Look in next Sunday's paper!

Rock the Vote

RockTheVote1 I rarely discuss politics on Heart of Green but occasionally I just can’t help myself.  Now is one of those times.

In San Francisco on November 4, I strongly urge everyone to get out and vote first and foremost (rock the vote!), and while you are there, please consider voting No on Proposition H – the hostile takeover of PG&E. Yes, hostile. As crazy as it might sound, our local Board of Supervisors is proposing a $4 Billion unsolicited public takeover of our local gas and electric utility. This is a very bad idea for at least the following seven reasons:

1. We don’t have $4 Billion to spend right now

2. Do we really want to give the Board of Supervisors the right to issue bonds in the future to takeover all public utilities (electric, gas, phone, Internet) without voter approval?  Um, no.

3. We don’t want our energy bills to increase $400 a year

4. No offense to anyone, but the Board of Supervisors seems unqualified to run an energy utility, prevent blackouts, keep the lights (CFLs) on, and lead us into the clean energy century. Think about the Muni bus system for example. Enough said.

5. Proposition H is not about what is best for San Francisco. It is an ideological power grab, and a dangerous one.

6. The Board of Supervisor members behind Proposition H support socialized power, not renewable energy.  They recently voted to build a new fossil fuel burning and polluting power plant in Potrero Hill.

7. Proposition H will not lead to a cleaner and greener city. There is no guarantee that the energy will be clean. They tried to call it a "Clean Energy Act" on the ballot but were legally barred because it was not true. PG&E is a leading solar power utility in the country and earned the 2007 Solar Portfolio Leadership award from the Solar Electric Power Association.

RenewablesPG&E is on track to meet the aggressive renewable energy portfolio goals set by the state of California for 2010.  PG&E’s power mix is currently 14% renewable, 17% large hydroelectric and 22% natural gas.  I have studied this issue in depth and have come to the conclusion that it is very easy to say "increase renewables to 100%" and very difficult to do this in practice.  We need significant federal and state investment incentives for transmission and storage technology to make this happen. For example, wind blows mostly at the wrong time, at night when less energy is needed, and we have no way of storing it currently. PG&E can invest in large solar thermal plants in the desert which they are doing, but then how do we bring the energy from the desert to San FranciscoNew transmission lines are needed to achieve radical increases in renewable energy. That said, we should be pursuing the transition from dirty fossil fuel energy to renewables as fast as possible in the spirit of Google's clean energy plan.

As Supervisor Carmen Chu says, “As a city, our priorities need to be solving the budget crisis and keeping our parks clean and our streets safe. Spending $4 billion on a power system takeover is the wrong priority.”

So let’s give Proposition H the heave-ho. Let’s keep the lights on, the renewable energy plans on track, the greenhouse gases in check, and the money in the residents’ pockets. Let’s not right a blank check to the SF Board of Supervisors. Please vote No on Proposition H. See also the San Francisco Chronicle's editorial An electrified risk: Reject Prop H

And while you are there, please consider voting Yes on Proposition 2 to help stop cruel animal farming and support family farmers. The web site www.ecovote.org also has some excellent analysis and recommendations on many ballot measures. www.rockthevote.org

ABOUT:
ForestEthics is a modern nonprofit organization that works to save endangered forests in the US, Canada, and Chile.  Recently, ForestEthics helped Victoria’s Secret, Dell and Williams-Sonoma switch to recycled and sustainable paper in millions of catalogs. This fall, ForestEthics launched its campaign for a national Do Not Mail list that would be similar to the successful Do Not Call list and would help to stop junk mail from old-growth forests and give citizens control over their mailboxes. 100 million trees per year are at stake, and 65,000+ signatures have already been collected.  Founded in 1994 and based in San Francisco, ForestEthics has helped to save over 7 million acres of forests and just achieved a monumental 55 million acre protection agreement of the Boreal forest in Canada.  www.forestethics.org and www.donotmail.org

Cool Globes are Cool

CoolGlobe_wave2 Today I watched the fog finally roll out of San Francisco and made my move – a trip down to Crissy Field to see the public art exhibition Cool Globes:  Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet.  It was truly a magnificent treat, a round feast for the eyes and an uplifting feast for the soul. And I knew that it would be more enjoyable without an Arctic wind blowing up my pants.

As you walk along the beach, you see a series of 37 globes, each designed by a local artist and portraying a theme in 3 dimensions. Each globe is 7 feet high, 5 feet in diameter, and 2,200 pounds in weight.  "Teenie Greenie!" shouts a green-colored globe from the parking lot.

Some globes are beautiful like Tree of Life with impressionist murals of nature. Others are wacky in a good way like the Consumer Recycling globe, which showcases just how attractive old cell phones can be. The Geothermal Energy globe is hot – look at all of those untapped spots on the West Coast. Still other globes are immensely creative like the We Are What We Eat globe, which contained a giant face made out of vegetables and a sign on the pear that said “Wet Paint.” I didn’t risk it.

There is even a globe about Idling, yes car idling, proving that everyone has a pet rock cause. Viewing the statue and school bus illustration, I found myself nodding in agreement, “Yes, let’s stop needless idling!”

Against the beautiful backdrop of the Golden Gate Bridge, you can witness patriotic globes, green roof globes, volunteering globes, and even whimsical globes with branches growing from their poles. I don’t want to spoil the experience and reveal them all because that would be uncool of me.

The marvelous thing about Cool Globes is that it emphasizes solutions in an enchanting way. At the end of viewing the spheres, it seems quite possible to solve global warming and other planetary ills. All we need is some paint and each other. The colorful installations will make you laugh, go “hmmm” and want to reach out and touch some globes and someone. I think that is the ultimate triumph of Cool Globes - in addition to providing useful green tips in a fun and accessible way, it makes you feel connected to the entire planet.

It is official. Cool Globes are cool and definitely worth checking out before they leave San Francisco on October 12 and proceed to other fortunate cities like San Diego and London.  www.coolglobes.com

One Stop Green Shopping

Futurenatura We all want a one stop shop for excellent green shopping. Our wishes have been answered with the launch of the new Amazon Green Store. You can browse eco-conscious products in the categories of Green Office, Green Cleaning, Green Lighting, Home & Garden, Books & Movies, Baby, and more. There is also an interesting feature called "Pick 3 Green Products you wish everyone had."  Since we can shop online, this gives us more time to recycle and compost everything, I mean go for a walk on the beach.

Please know that I am not advocating conspicuous eco consumption or buying for buying sake. Many people tell me that they have a hard time finding healthy green products in their area or do not have time to run around looking for eco-goodies, which can cost more in gas money!  To make ordering even more environmentally-sound, one can try to consolidate purchases into one shipment from a source like Amazon Green.

Other reliable and inspiring green shopping web sites worthy of a glance include Organic Style, Gaiam, and FutureNatural for eco-beauty.

I also want to give a shout out to my friend Robert Craymer of RC Green sustainable furniture fame. Whenever we needed a last-minute VIP Green Lounge, Robert was there with his hip and eco interior designs.

RCGreen

Please check out his new RC Green Tree of Sustainability. He is also filming a TV show of all of his escapades in the VIP green world. A natural in front of the camera and wonderful with people, Robert is guaranteed to delight both on camera and off.

Ecofabulous is Fabulous

Zem Nadine_MG_0256 Change is in the air.  The fall season is right around the corner (is it too late to plan a vacation?), Paris Hilton is running for president, and I am finally eco-decorating my apartment after living here for a year with virtually no furniture. I will miss the $14 electricity bill and the shock on people’s faces when they walk through the door. Surprise, it’s empty but look at the view!

But the most exciting change is a bright green one.  After years of being an unofficial team, Zem Joaquin and I are becoming an official green team at her Ecofabulous, the treasure chest web site showcasing the best of green and fabulous.  Those editors sparked and led by Zem are tough let me tell you.  Sustainable furniture is ripped apart, green cleaning products are put to the test, eco-shoes are heavily scrutinized, and organic alcohol occassionally must be sampled.  If your product isn’t fabulous and fully eco, you have about as much chance of getting profiled as an Escalade.

At Ecofabulous, my position is VP of Special Projects, which means I am covering a wide range of mysterious and not so mysterious initiatives including events, greening, journalism, cleantech, and the search for alien life. I am happy to be teaming up with my eco partner in crime, with whom I have already accomplished so much.  And let's give credit where credit is due. Without Zem, I'd still be wearing clodhopper shoes from Ann Taylor.

What is to become of Heart of Green?  It is still me at my core. I will continue updating the site with planet-chic events, amazing causes and charities, side adventures in eco-fashion, and posts on subjects I feel are being underrepresented out there.  Get ready for some outrageous topics coming up.  Green is a journey and a more thrilling and possible one every day.  So net net, Heart of Green will be a personal blog, and Ecofabulous will be a professional moniker.  For the latest in desirable eco-beauty, eco-fashion, green design, healthy homes, and sustainable lifestyles, hop on over to the newly-relaunched www.ecofabulous.com  It’s a fabulous place to see and be seen, green.

Eco-Fashion On Sale

Zoo-green Would you pay $80 for a designer organic cotton t-shirt?  What if it helped to save the planet?  Even better, what if it were on sale?

While I have splurged on hip eco-friendly tees in the past (can you say adorable Zooey?), I have also bought many on sale. Who doesn’t love a good bargain.

Now thanks to the web site You Deserve, the sale ends today and starts tomorrow. Eco-fashionistas are rejoicing because every day is an eco-fashion sale day on www.youdeserve.com. Consider it overstock for planet-conscious brands like Del Forte, Grace & Cello, and Oxygen Required (bamboo and surplus fabrics). There are even Under the Canopy bathrobes at a discount. I see several items that I paid full price for!

A fabulous Ecoist portfolio tote is on an unbelievable sale, marked down from $138 to $48. I have always wanted one of these colorful pieces made Fair Trade from 100% recycled candy wrappers. If you don’t buy it, I just might have to. 5, 4, 3, 2...

As for a minor wish list, I would love to see the brand name as part of each product listing initially, but you can click through to see the maker.  Some of the fabrics just say “cotton” without the word organic in front of it, which is a little confusing, but most of the fabrics are eco-friendly. I hope that even more eco-fashion brands will join the party online.

Not everyone has the luxury of having a wonderful eco-fashion boutique around the corner (Eco Citizen) or can spend $80 on a bamboo t-shirt, but thanks to You Deserve, more people will get a break on eco-fashion today and that is an glorious thing for our wallets and the planet.  www.youdeserve.com

Why events?
On a personal note, why do I participate in so many events?  I often get asked this question. I believe that an event can be a wonderful and unparalleled catalyst to learn about a cause, an organization, an issue, a person, a solution and more that can help to save the planet. It is rare to fall out of bed in the morning and say, “Hmm, I think I will learn about the Amazon rainforest today.”  It just doesn’t happen. Life is too busy. Or maybe you do, but you are, um, different. An event is an opportunity to bring people together for a fun celebration.  Did I mention it has to be fun?  There have to be several wow factors that delight the crowd and make the party a worthwhile alternative to watching Planet Green at home.

WildAid I fell into the environmental event world by chance. When I first decided to give the cubicle the boot and replace the gray office with the gray whale, my question was “What do I care most about?” The answer at the time was tigers. Endangered tigers and lions. So I called WildAid and asked, “What can I do?”  They needed a launch party thrown in San Francisco, and the rest is history in the making as they say.

I like doing events that are complimentary. Free is always the right price!  Movie screenings and premieres are some of my favorite events because (almost) nothing surpasses the experience of watching a great film. Sometimes events are fundraisers and have a ticket price benefiting a charity.  I have a hard time asking for money. Between asking someone for funds or donating something myself, I will often do the latter much to the horror of my financial advisor who is always telling me to “pull back.”  Why should I when the planet needs help now?  If I wait until I am 80 to start trying to protect the forests for example, they might be all gone. I would rather help now. That is just my personal choice. It absolutely doesn’t have to be anyone else’s.

Over time, I have learned that many people actually want to donate money to causes they care about.  A shocking discovery I know!  Not everyone is passionate about every cause, and that is a good thing.  If everyone were passionate about the oceans above all else, then who would put education, global health, or climate change as their No. 1?   We need to divide and conquer. The oceans are probably a bad example because they need more champions. They are easy to forget about because they seem fine at the surface. 70% of our planet is remarkably covered by oceans. Anyway, when people become connected with opportunities to make a difference in areas they care deeply about, that is party nirvana. And it doesn’t have to be about money. There are so many ways to make a positive impact such as volunteering, writing a blog post, and spreading the word. Even just being aware and caring is huge.

Occasionally, I get to attend a party with absolutely no purpose where I have no role except to have fun. My friend and I overdosed on frosting at the last one.  Correction:  I OD’ed on frosting and she OD’ed on cake. If there is a dance floor and excellent music involved, I am the happiest guest there.  A green girl can let her hair down from time to time, but only when the planet isn’t looking.

Heroes are Good

Superman_car When the going gets tough, the tough get heroes. Al Gore is one of my heroes. He has all the qualities a modern superhero should have:  an enlightened vision, willingness to take on the villains, persistence, and dashing good looks - at least I think so.

Here are highlights from Al Gore’s speech A Generational Challenge to Repower America. A member of Al's Hollywood entourage, Will.i.am even came from LA to hear him speak.

If you don’t like Al Gore, then let's try to imagine that someone else is talking. One of the key things we must do is de-politicize the environment. Taking a vitamin pill is not a political issue. Going to the gym, drinking clean water, or breathing clean air are not political issues. Living on a healthy planet is not a political issue, or is it?

A grassy park brings people from all walks of life together. The day that the environment became a “left” issue was the day that we started having problems. We do not have to choose between the environment and jobs. Green jobs hold great promise for a renewed, self-sufficient, prosperous U.S. economy.  The environment can unify us, not divide us.

I admit that the former Vice President may not be the best person to de-politicize green and clean, but here is the best of Al:

Sun & Wind & Geo Rule: “Enough solar energy falls on the surface of the earth every 40 minutes to meet 100 percent of the entire world's energy needs for a full year. Enough wind power blows through the Midwest corridor every day to also meet 100 percent of electricity demand. Geothermal energy is capable of providing enormous supplies of electricity for America.”

Repower America:  “Today I challenge our nation to commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.”

We Are Doing What?: “We are borrowing money from China to buy oil from the Persian Gulf to burn it in ways that destroy the planet. Every bit of that's got to change.

As Oil Prices Rise, Sun Prices Fall: “When demand for oil and coal increases, their price goes up. When demand for solar cells increases, the price often comes down. That’s the difference. Sunlight is free forever.”

Green Jobs:  “When we send money to foreign countries to buy nearly 70 percent of the oil we use every day, they build new skyscrapers and we lose jobs. When we spend that money building solar arrays and windmills, we build competitive industries and gain jobs here at home.”  [Huge applause]

Who is Benefiting from the Status Quo?“There are those who will tell us this can't be done. Some of the voices we hear are the defenders of the status quo - the ones with a vested interest in perpetuating the current system, no matter how high a price the rest of us will have to pay.”

American People Want Change:  “To those who say the challenge is not politically viable: I suggest they go before the American people and try to defend the status quo. Then bear witness to the people's appetite for change. The time is now."

Status Quo is a No Go:  "I for one do not believe our country can withstand 10 more years of the status quo. Our families cannot stand 10 more years of gas price increases. Our workers cannot stand 10 more years of job losses and outsourcing of factories. Our economy cannot stand 10 more years of sending $2 billion every 24 hours to foreign countries for oil. Our soldiers and their families cannot take another 10 years of repeated troop deployments to dangerous regions that just happen to have large oil supplies.”

Plug-Ins For All:  We could increase the value and efficiency of the grid by helping our struggling auto giants switch to the manufacture of plug-in electric cars.”

Policy Matters:  “I have long supported a sharp reduction in payroll taxes with the difference made up in CO2 taxes. We should tax what we burn, not what we earn."

Drilling Won’t Matter:  “When people rightly complain about higher gasoline prices, we propose to give more money to the oil companies and pretend that they're going to bring gasoline prices down. It will do nothing of the sort, and everyone knows it.”

China is Gulping Oil:  “If you want to know the truth about gasoline prices, here it is: the exploding demand for oil, especially in places like China, is overwhelming the rate of new discoveries by so much that oil prices are almost certain to continue upward over time no matter what the oil companies promise.”

A Generational Call:  “This is a generational moment. A moment when we decide our own path. We're committed to changing not just light bulbs, but laws. And laws will only change with leadership.”

Man on the Moon, Man on Earth:  Just as we put a man on the moon in 1969, “we must now lift our nation to reach another goal that will change history. Our civilization depends upon us embarking on a new journey of exploration and discovery [to end our reliance on fossil-based fuels]. We have an opportunity to take a giant leap for humankind."

Thinking about this, it does seem almost silly how wedded we are to fossil fuels, which will run out.  They are fossils and by definition, they are old and finite and dirty. Decayed organic matter. Would we burn a cemetery for energy?  That is essentially what we are doing. How does that celebrate life?  The sun shines down on us every day. The wind blows every day. The Earth's core boils every day. We can take advantage of these “free” renewable and clean sources of energy every day.

Sometimes I feel like Lois Lane, waiting for Al Gore to swoop down and take me for a ride high above the clouds to save the planet.  We need Al Gores in our life to help us envision a brighter future. But in our modern society, every person who embraces the connection between ourselves and the planet is a hero in his/her own right. So is every person who makes 1-2 small changes or spreads the word about how ecofabulous it can be to live a healthy lifestyle. Going forward, we need champions for change, not defenders of the status quo. We need heroes like Al Gore and like all of us.

55 Million Acres Protected

In an extraordinary announcement yesterday, the Ontario government has agreed to protect 55 million acres of the vast Northern Boreal Forest in Canada from mining and development. This is 50% of Ontario’s pristine yet threatened Northern Boreal Forest, and an area half the size of California.  Now that is something to celebrate!

BorealForest

Here are some jaw-dropping facts:

Big55 million acres of the largest intact forest remaining on Earth are now protected from development.

Carbon12.5 million tonnes of CO2 is sequestered each year by the Northern Boreal forest.

WaterThe Boreal Forest ranks No. 1 in storing freshwater (in wetlands and lakes) and carbon (in trees and soil) compared to all other terrestrial ecosystems.

People28 First Nations indigenous communities live in the Boreal Forest.

AnimalsMore than 200 animals live in the Northern Boreal, such as the bald eagle, wolverine, lake sturgeon, caribou, hundreds of songbird species, and the polar bear.

We don’t often hear about the Boreal Forest, which is a continuous belt of conifer trees across North America and Eurasia. What kinds of trees live there?  Firs, pines, and spruces for example.  Basically trees that have a cone. Perhaps the Boreal could be nicknamed the Great Conehead forest.

Over the last 3 years, ForestEthics has campaigned to raise the profile of the Boreal Forest worldwide.  They reached out to over 500 wood and paper customers including Limited Brands, Staples, and Lowes, and they supported the First Nations in their struggle to keep their natural home.

“The government of Ontario’s commitment to protect the Northern Boreal Forest raises the bar for environmental protection across Canada and around the world,” said Todd Paglia, executive director of ForestEthics.

There is still work to do to protect the Southern Boreal from accelerated logging, but ForestEthics and other environmental organizations like the Pew Environment Group are on it. If yesterday was any indication, 2008 is going to be a good year for the forests.

Save the date Tuesday September 30 for the annual ForestEthics party in San Francisco celebrating the launch of the Do Not Mail campaign to help curtail junk mail, save 100 million trees per year, and take back our mailboxes.  Bring your junk mail for shredding and recycling!  I guarantee it will be fun, or you can give my address to the catalog companies.  www.forestethics.org

A Charmone Cinderella Story

If Cinderella had been wearing one of Charmone’s Fall 08 Collection shoes, she would have never left her slipper behind at the ball.

Charmone-natp

A favorite of eco-celebrities like Natalie Portman, this Charmone collection features stunning metallic designs from gold, silver, and bronze to head-turning pink and Stardust blue.  The seductive savannah was Charmone’s muse this season.  Popular silhouettes are also back including the Darjeeling bootie and cutting-edge Cezanne peep-toe heel.

The three pairs of Charmone stilettos in my closet never fail to turn heads when they see the light of day, or the spotlight of a cocktail party.  I love them.  People say, “Nice shoes!” and I can respond, “Thanks, and they are eco-friendly!”  They are shocked, and frankly I still am too that planet-chic shoes can be so darn beautiful.

Charmone08 What is eco-charming about Charmone shoes?  They are 100% vegan and cruelty-free (no leather) and handcrafted of high-quality Italian microfibers in Italy, Brazil, and LA.  Sweatshop-free of course.  These luxe beauties incorporate water-based glue and nickel-free hardware, without any undesirable PVC or chromium.  Plus, Charmone shoes are breathable and lightweight with gorgeous European designs.  The proof that beauty doesn’t have to be painful for the planet is in the foot.

And wearing Charmone just might make a prince show up.

You can view Charmone’s fabulous footwear at eco-fashion boutiques nationwide or online at www.charmone.com

Swim Away Home

This weekend at Moss Beach in Northern California, 4 rehabilitated baby harbor seals and 2 young sea lions made their way back into the ocean, after being nursed back to health by the Marine Mammal Center.

Seal_MarineMammalCenterv3

The cage doors opened and the sea lion pups made a direct line for the waves. Poof, they were gone!  The baby harbor seals, on the other hand, were far more timid. “Where are we?” they seemed to wonder.  “What do we do now?”  The bewildered look on their faces upon re-entering the ocean was priceless. They continued to swim, play, and dive around Moss Beach for hours.  Luckily, there is an established harbor seal colony nearby that will teach these wide-eyed creatures the ropes.

The four seal beauties had satellite tags on their heads, which explained their funny-looking hats. Scientists will be able to track where the harbor seals travel for one year and make sure that they are ok.

I highly recommend a visit to the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve near Half Moon Bay at low tide for some spectacular tide pooling.

Based on the vibrant health of this outgoing class, the Marine Mammal Center clearly does a wonderful job rehabilitating lost and injured seals, sea lions, and an occasional dolphin.  The staff feeds the rescued animals in a special way that does not domesticate them, thereby enabling them to rejoin wild ocean life. Based in the Marin Headlands in Sausalito with a new center, the organization has rescued and treated over 12,000 animals since 1975 and reached over 100,000 school children with their marine science education programs. I hope you will get to experience the magic of seeing a newly-healthy baby harbor seal swim away home to the sea.

GRID Alternatives
Solarthon 2008

WHEN:
Saturday June 28, 2008
8:30 am - 4:30 pm

WHERE:
Habitat for Humanity East Bay
Please see Solarthon

These events fill up quickly, so if registration becomes full, don't despair. Another installation day will soon be in the air.

PG&E and its Solar Habitat Initiative have graciously stepped up to become the event’s flagship supporter.  The new solar systems will generate over $130,000 in clean renewable power over their expected lifespans, while offsetting 400 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

Over 150 volunteers will participate in an uplifting and fun day in the sun for the community and the planet.  If it’s foggy in San Francisco, what better excuse to get out of town, get some rays and celebrate this great energy resource shining down on us every day. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and some friends. Can we do the installations in our bathing suits?

944 Launches in San Francisco

944_Green_Issue Welcome to San Francisco, 944 Magazine.  944 is one of the fastest growing lifestyle publications in the nation featuring local and national content. And it is beautiful.

944 began in Phoenix six years ago and now has custom books in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Phoenix, Miami, San Diego, Las Vegas, and Orange County. Clearly, they have an affinity for sunny places. They must think San Francisco is sunny because we are in California.

I know you are dying to know, like I was, what do the digits 944 stand for?  In addition to a nice Porsche, 944 is the address of the building where the magazine first got its start.  We are literal in the Bay Area and have to get to the bottom of things.

Flipping through the pages of 944’s inaugural San Francisco June issue, we see fashion, music, food and wine, art, design, eco-friendly resorts, celebrities, the social scene, and more. 944 seems to be filling a different niche than my other still-beloved SF magazines including 7x7 and San Francisco magazine. 944 is edgy, elegant, and inclusive. By covering all corners of San Francisco, it has the power to bring the city together.

Here are a few exciting things about 944.  It is complimentary at select high-end spots across the city including hotels, boutiques, salons, and restaurants. It is printed on Forest Stewardship Council (FSC-certified) sustainable paper with 10% recycled content every month, not just in April.  Kudos to 944 for being one of the first magazines in the country to take this important eco-friendly step. It also has an incredibly short lead time (2 days before printing) so the content is up-to-the-minute and true to month.  For example, the Black & White Ball photos from May 31 made it into the June issue. Amazing!

I am thrilled to be a contributing eco-editor for 944 San Francisco. My column is called the Green Spot, which somehow got shortened to g-spot in the first issue. I can’t imagine how.

This Thursday night June 19, 944 will celebrate its official Launch Party at the Bently Reserve in collaboration with Martel and Nabiel and Vintage 415 with performances by the Macy Gray, the Fugees, E! Entertainment Host Catt Sadler, Chris Clouse, DJ Vice, and DJ Solomon. Now that is a line-up, and thank goodness I don't have any 8:00 am meetings on Friday.  www.944.com/sanfrancisco/

In my new role as 944's Eco Editor, I was thrilled to be able to share a few tips for Eco-friendly Gift Ideas on ABC-7's View from the Bay show.  Video
